A GREAT ADDITIONAL TIPP WHILE YOU VISIT ZURICH – an exhibition of KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER “the ballad of Jim”
From 01st November, 2018 to 23rd December, 2018, 2. Stock / Museum
Weinberger has become known for his portraits of the half-strong in their spectacular presentation. But his work is much more comprehensive and multi-faceted. The Zurich exhibition therefore presents his entire work, including key works from all periods as well as unpublished works that have a strong connection to Zurich. The curatorial approach follows an erotic trail, which runs from the earliest to the last pictures and makes visible the artistic-photographic and erotic self-understanding of Weinberger. Weinberger's voluptuous portraits of men are powerful, free-thinking and self-confident answers to a fundamental social problem of the post-war era: how (and where) can a gay photographer take pictures of men in a still largely homophobic, hetero-normative society? In the legendary, based in Zurich, but internationally radiating gay organization "The circle made Weinberger under the pseudonym" Jim "the court photographer. He documented the various parties and vaudeville evenings and their visitors, which explained him, however, only moderately interested. With more enthusiasm he contributed to the magazine of the same name and to subscribers throughout the world of the "circle" of homoerotic portraits. The exhibition is designed by Patrik Schedler, who since 2000 secured the work and later the estate of Karlheinz Weinberger, sighted and opened up. An exhibition in collaboration with Galerie Woerdehoff in Paris
