The Chinese Metropolis of Shanghai shows its gay cheek in June.
If you’ve never been to Shanghai, you should pack your bags quickly now: For the eighth time the only Pride Festival in mainland China will take place there from 17th to 26th of June. Following the motto “I am I”, the gays and lesbians of the city stand up for the right to develop their own personality. The aim is to achieve normality for queer lifestyles, explains Pride organiser Hans Ibrahim. “How can we live normally – kiss, dress up, take to the streets with our beloved? “How do we manage to enjoy the ordinary happiness that others take for granted, like at work?”
During the Pride Festival numerous events will deal with these questions, from conferences to the ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival with long and short films to the ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival with Chinese and English language productions.
The Shanghai Pride version of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (Germany got talent), called “Pride’s Got Talent”, is all about fun. You can also enjoy yourself at the opening party, the graduation party and in between e.g. during a pub tour – where the Shanghai newcomer can easily get to know the gay scene.
