It is a landmark decision: Taiwan will be the first country in Asia to adopt legislation for gay marriage .<\/p>\n

This is the consequence of a decision by the Constitutional Court from 2017. The Court\u00a0 gave the government two years to amend the law back then. Conservative parties tried to prevent the change – without success.<\/p>\n

The new law allows same-sex couples to enter into a “permanent exclusive union” that can later be converted into marriage. Gay marriage will in no way be inferior to heterosexual marriage in terms of adoption rights and tax advantages.<\/p>\n

LGBT activists across the country are celebrating the historic victory \u2013 on today’s International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT).<\/p>\n

Taiwan is seen as a pioneer in the fight for equality. Today’s decision therefore raises hope that other Asian countries will follow Taiwan’s example as well.<\/p>\n
