The law on protection from conversion treatments was passed today with the votes of CDU, SPD and FDP. Germany is only the second country in the EU after Malta to ban the dangerous pseudo-therapies – but with some exceptions.<\/p>\n
There was a hard struggle for the exceptions mentioned in the introduction until the very end. Almost as if the Green Party and the LSVD would rather not have a law at all than the compromise that has now been reached. The new law will provide a real ban on changing the sexual orientation of children and young people with the threat of a year’s imprisonment for any attempt to do so.<\/p>\n
The joy of today’s achievement was muddied though by the fact that the procedures already described by the World Medical Association as a violation of human rights in 2013 are only now \u2013 and in part – punishable by law.<\/p>\n
