Scotland is the first country in the world with an LGBTIQ*-inclusive education system, that teaches about LGBTIQ*-relevant subjects and is embedded in all Scottish curricula. The move is part of a comprehensive strategy to curb prejudice against LGBTIQ* youth in the education system.<\/p>\n

How did this happen?<\/h2>\n

Following research showing that homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are a major problem in Scottish schools and that LGBTIQ* young people feel under-represented and excluded in Scottish schools, Education Minister John Swinney launched the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign in May 2017.<\/p>\n

A Taskforce on Gender Equality in Education and Learning, established in November 2018, worked with TIE’s team of experts to develop the cornerstones of the new LGBTIQ* curriculum and identify actions to address gender inequality.<\/p>\n

The campaign’s approach is to create awareness of queer identities among students, but also among teaching staff.<\/p>\n

The core topics, such as the history of the LGBTIQ* movement, are taught in different age groups and subjects. This empowers young queer people and reduces prejudices that often lead to bullying. The awareness created in this way should help prevent discrimination.<\/p>\n

The success of the programme proves it right<\/h2>\n

93 per cent of the students who participated in the LGBT-inclusive lessons said they had a better understanding of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.<\/p>\n

82 per cent of students said they would no longer use derogatory language or swear words such as “that’s so gay”.<\/p>\n

82% of students who previously had negative opinions about queer people said that they changed their opinions positively after participating in LGBTIQ*-inclusive classes.<\/p>\n
