The airline no longer wants to force people who do not identify with any current gender to choose between those two. On top of that, customers can now select when specifying their gender. United was thereby the first US airline to follow the guidelines of the international airline association IATA. The association agreed to the optional information and made it available for its memeber airlines. Other airlines are to follow, including Delta and American Airlines.
