Gay Guide Oman

In the Sultanate of Oman, homosexuality is illegal under paragraph 33 of the Penal Code and can be punished with a prison sentence of up to three years. It is reported that cases are only brought before the court if there "indecent behaviour" is stated. Any work for LGBT's rights is also illegal, so that respective organsations operate underground or via social media. A gay scene also exists underground. The state allegedly turns a blind eye as long as homosexual encounters remain absolutely discreet. This is different to Oman's neighbours, where homosexulas are persecuted deliberately. The English-language newspaper "The Week" published an article in 2013 in which it drew attention to this. It received a public warning for this and had to print an apology and correction - it was said that the article "advertised" homosexuality.
