Polish Politician Jarosław Kaczyński, chairman of the Polish party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (PiS) gave a speech at the conference “Polish Life – Pride and Duty” at Włocławek on Wednesday. He there emphasised once again on the importance of Christianity for his country and strongly criticised the Polish movie “Kler”. It is about child abuse in the Catholic Church. Kaczyński claimed that “Kler”, which also features gay characters, is “an attack on the Church”. The politician also used the polarising film to make anti-LGBT propaganda. This being part in PiS’s European election campaign comes hardly as a surprise: Kaczyński’s party always presents itself as an advocate of family and conservative values.

LGBT-rights threaten Polish Nation

With his latest statements, however, the campaining against sexual minorities reached a different level. “We are dealing with a direct attack on families and children – the sexualisation of children, that entire LBGT movement, gender. This is imported, but all these things actually threaten our identity today, our country, its survival and therefore the Polish nation,” the politician explained. By claiming that the struggle for LGBT rights is “imported”, he denies his own queer fellow countrymen their belonging and human rights. Kaczyński thus deprives the Polish LGBT movement further of the base its existence. Even worse, he associates homosexuality with child abuse. Hopefully, his statements will be met with strong answers and calls for retraction by politicians in other EU member states.

Jarosław Kaczyński has been chairman of his party since 2003 and was Prime Minister of Poland from 2006 to 2007. His twin brother Lech Kaczyński was president of the country until his death on 10th April 2010. Jarosław Kaczyński’s political views are considered ultra-conservative and Catholic.
