It is a landmark decision: Taiwan will be the first country in Asia to adopt legislation for gay marriage .
This is the consequence of a decision by the Constitutional Court from 2017. The Court gave the government two years to amend the law back then. Conservative parties tried to prevent the change – without success.
The new law allows same-sex couples to enter into a “permanent exclusive union” that can later be converted into marriage. Gay marriage will in no way be inferior to heterosexual marriage in terms of adoption rights and tax advantages.
LGBT activists across the country are celebrating the historic victory – on today’s International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT).
Taiwan is seen as a pioneer in the fight for equality. Today’s decision therefore raises hope that other Asian countries will follow Taiwan’s example as well.
In the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2019, Taiwan ranked 41st among other countries, including Italy.
