Li Huanwu and his boyfriend Heng Yirui got married in South Africa on May 24th. Congratulations! Most Singaporeans know Huanwu as the grandson of Singapore’s late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Li Huanwu is also the nephew of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Back in 2017, Li Huanwu took part in the LGBT event “Pink Dot” in Singapore. At that time, he called on heterosexual and homosexual citizens to participate and to celebrate and promote unity. However, it was not until June 2018 that he came out publicly by participating in a photo exhibition. The exhibition “LGBTQ persons who wish to come out to family, friends and peers in the community” took place in Singapore.
Same-sex sexual activity is still illegal in Singapore, as is adoption of children by gay couples. There is no anti-discimination protection for LGBTs. The courageous public confession of Huanwu and Yiuri will hopefully further the debate on LGBT rights in Singapore.
Li’s father, Lee Hsien Yang, told the South China Morning Post: “I believe my father would have been thrilled to know this.”
In the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2019, Singapore ranked 83rd among other countries, including Poland and Romania.
A ridiculous amount of coffee was consumed in the process of building this project. Add some fuel if you'd like to keep us going!
