Botwana’s High Court decided in a historic ruling that homosexuality is no longer punishable in the African country. Section 164 of Botswana’s laws prohibited oral and anal sex for homo- and heterosexual couples. It deemed those practices to be “carnal knowledge against the order of nature.”
Judge Michael Leburu explained: “Human dignity is harmed when minority groups are marginalised”. This is a significant step towards equality on the African continent since homosexuality is still illegal in more than two dozen African states. In five countries it is even punishable with death.
In the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2019, Botswana ranked 83rd.
