The German band Rammstein often hits the front page with their tendency to provocation. As part of their tour through Eastern Europe, the musicians are currently taking a clear stand against homophobia.
Their show in Chorzów in arch-conservative Poland made the headlines. Drummer Christoph Schneider waved a big rainbow flag during their performance of the song “Liebe ist für alle da” (“Love is for everyone”) During the song the rock musicians were carried through the crowd on a rubber dinghy.
But Rammstein were not Rammstein if they could not top it:
Two band members kissed each other on the mouth during the song “Ausländer” (‘Foreigners’) on their gig in Moscow, Russia. 81,000 concertgoers attended the gig in the sold-out Luschniki stadium.
The band later posted on Instagram a photo of Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul Landers kissing, with the inscription in Russian: “Russia, we love you!
Poland ranked 83rd in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index in 2019, Russia 159th and the Autonomous Republic of Chechnya in the Northern Caucasus in Russia ranked 197th, as in the previous year, marking the bottom of the list. This is due to massive attacks on homosexuals, political persecution and even murders.
Poland recently made negative headlines after right-wing radicals attacked the Pride parade in Białystok. But a sign of solidarity went through the country. In Warsaw alone, more than 1000 people joined a spontaneous demonstration against homophobia.
