Because Human Rights Campaign criticised Richard Grenell’s style of politics, the former US ambassador to Germany wants to cut off the organisation’s funding. He publicly called on companies to boycott America’s largest LGBTIQ* organisation and stop giving them donations.

Richard Grenell had claimed in a video of the Log Cabin Republicans, America’s largest association of conservative LGBTIQ*s, on August 19 that Donald Trump was “the most gay-friendly president in American history”. But the video’s core message was an attack on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Grenell claimed,

“President Trump has done more to promote gay and lesbian rights in three years than Joe Biden has done in over 40 years in Washington”.

This absurd adulation of Donald Trump – Human Rights Campaign (HRC) could not leave it at that. In a short clip, the organisation listed some of Joe Biden’s efforts for the rights of the queer community, thus proving, on the basis of well-founded facts, that Grenell’s statements are not true, but are indeed absurd lies.

“Richard ‘Gaslight’1 Grenell”, as he is now called by HRC, took the counterstatement as an opportunity to boycott the organisation. He suggested that companies should donate the same amount to conservative groups like the “Log Cabin Republicans”.

“Companies that give money to the Human Rights Campaign support ugly partisanship,” the 53-year-old wrote in a tweet.

The fact is that gay rights were never part of Donald Trump’s agenda. The Washington Post has compiled a selection of anti-gay policies of the Trump administration that we do not want to withhold from you.

Trump signed a bill that undermined Obama’s anti-discrimination protection for LGBTIQ* workers.

The Department of Justice under Trump argued that an important federal civil rights law did not protect workers from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, thus once again taking a stand against a decision made under Obama.

The Trump administration took a number of steps to undermine the rights of transgender Americans, including a ban on transgender troops in the military, the removal of anti-discrimination protections and the adoption of a decree defining gender as the biological sex of a person.

The United States Department of State appealed against the decision of a federal judge to recognise the US citizenship of a young girl who was being carried out for a gay couple by a surrogate mother in Canada. Although the girl’s parents are legally married, the State Department claims that because the daughter was born in Canada by a surrogate mother, she was “born illegitimate” and therefore is not entitled to birthright.

HRC has also published another video on YouTube. It features queer people from all over America who provide solid arguments why Trump is by no means a friend of the LGBTIQ* community.

  1. “Gaslighting” is a form of emotional manipulation and brainwashing. It is a form of emotional manipulation and brainwashing in which someone takes advantage of a relationship of trust to place themselves in a position of power and to make their counterpart doubt themselves through targeted statements and actions.
