Sphen and Magic, the two gay penguins who took the world by storm two years ago, have a new baby. Since October, they have been the proud parents of a chick that hatched in the sub-Antarctic zone of the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium.
This was the second time the couple had adopted and hatched an egg from a heterosexual couple. The babies hatched last month in the penguin enclosure at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. “We are delighted to welcome the new penguin chicks to our colony,” said Kerri Dixon, Penguin Supervisor at SEA LIFE Aquarium. “They are doing really well and are gaining weight.”
The two Gentoo Penguins made history in 2018 as the Aquarium’s first gay penguin couple to successfully incubate and raise a chick – a girl named Sphengic.
Baby Sphengic is now called Lara and is an incredibly curious penguin. “Lara is now two years old and surprises us every day anew with how independent she is,” said an aquarium spokeswoman.
Sphen and Magic soon grandparents?
As the youngest member of the colony, Lara even tried to build her own nest and incubate eggs during this breeding season. “Although she is still relatively young, she tried to participate in this year’s incubation season. She and her partner set up a nest and carefully monitored it, but unfortunately she was unable to hatch an offspring.”
All the best for the next breeding season!
