Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit has christened Lufthansa’s latest A380 aircraft “Berlin” on May 22nd using water from the river Spree instead of champagne. Joint by Christoph Franz, CEO of Lufthansa AG, the focus was rather on the near future rather than on a revised opening date for the new single airport BER in March 2013. Despite the delay, Lufthansa is sticking to the planned expansion of its flight programme from 3 June. It will be operated from Tegel airüprt until the opening of BER. Even then the flagship A380 will not be serving Berlin on scheduled flights. The nine aircraft that are based at Frankfurt airport will serve destinations such as San Francisco, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Singapore, Beijing and Houston (starting August 1st).

Lufthansa is increasing its services from 9 to a total of 39 destinations in Europe – including Nice, Mallorca, Barcelona, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Stockholm and Rome. In addition to 9 aircraft based in Berlin at present, a further 6 brand-new Airbus A320/319 aircraft will be based here. The increase in Lufthansa flights to over 1000 per week (take-offs and landings) will be a real challenge for Tegel airport. At a press conference, Oliver Wagner, Senior Vice President Direct Services, was confident that Tegel and its management were up to the challenge.

As in 2011 already, Lufthansa will take part in this year’s Berlin Pride. The airline will raffle return tickets to Tel Aviv for two on its homepage.
