The corkscrew releases the cap of Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Gin dark bottle with its elegant turquoise blue label with a light “plop”. The high-quality natural cork is a reference to the hint of Riesling with which the gin from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region is infused. It pays hommage to the the charm of tradition and quality. If you don’t want to pour the half-litre bottle at once, however, the cork is somewhat impractical. The gin has an elegant taste with a fruity floral note once poured and the juniper is early recognisable. When mixed as G&T I like it best with a restrained, not too sweet tonic like the Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water. The drink becomes extraordinary, almost extravagant, when you add half a strawberry ; it makes it more sensual and seductive. This is then certainly no longer a classic gin and tonic – and not only for connoisseurs a refreshing and exciting change. The Ferdinand’s will certainly not replace the proven dry Tanqueray as standard in my bar, but like The Duke from Munich or Monkey’s Black Forest Gin it is another first-class gin from Germany.
