Fly as you are – United Airlines has recently announced that its passengers will now be able to select the title “Mx”. It can be selected in addition to “Ms” and “Mr” in the booking process. The airline no longer wants to force people who do not identify with any current gender to choose between those two. On top of that, customers can now select when specifying their gender. They can choose between U (for undisclosed) or X (for unspecified) in addition to M (for male) or F (for female). However, the specification must match the one on their passport or ID.
More airlines to follow?
United was thereby the first US airline to follow the guidelines of the international airline association IATA. The association agreed to the optional information and made it available for its memeber airlines. Other airlines are to follow, including Delta and American Airlines. British Airways and Air New Zealand are currently considering possible changes. According to reports, Lufthansa Group is as well. The airline is the largest in Europe in terms of passengers carried. It is checking whether to keep the binary system or introduce a third option for all customers.
A ridiculous amount of coffee was consumed in the process of building this project. Add some fuel if you'd like to keep us going!
