IMPORTANT UPDATE: Ensure that you take sufficient cash with you when travelling to India. The old 500-, 1,000- and 2,000- Rupee notes were recently replaced with new ones but not enough notes where printed. In December 2013, the Supreme Court set aside a 2009 verdict by the Delhi High Court that had decriminalized homosexuality. This has turned gay sex into a punishable offence once again and catapulted India back into the legal standpoint of colonial times under the British. The court indicated, however, that changing the law was the responsibility of the government. A petition demanding the verdict to be revised was rejected in January 2015. Given the landslide victory of the conservative party in the parliamentary elections, the situation of homosexuals can currently not be expected to change in the near future. It remains to be hoped that the temporary liberalization of recent years has empowered more activists to show courage and put pressure on politicians and society to finally get rid of the old law. New Delhi's second Gay Pride Parade took place on the 28th June 2009. Homosexuality in Indian society remains however a taboo even though several, famous Bollywood actors have supported a liberalisation. The clout of the religious influence was demonstrated in October 2011, when pressure from Hindu and Catholic groups forced the government of the federal state of Goa to shelve plans for marketing it as a gay-friendly part of India. A number of politicians have also further stoked resentments towards homosexuals on occasions.
