Gay Guide Slovakia

As recently as 2004, the foreign minister still demanded guarantees that Slovakia would not have to legalize gay or lesbian marriages or even recognize same-sex partnerships registered in other countries. But Slovakia has anti-discrimination regulations in place despite all this, which since 2013 also include a law requiring harsher penalties for perpetrators of hate crimes based on sexual orientation. Homosexuality is not illegal, and the legal age of consent is fifteen. In 2014, parliament passed a constitutional amendment that prohibits same-sex marriage and defines marriage as the exclusive reserve of opposite-sex couples. In the last few years, the public opinion concerning homosexuality has undergone a considerable change. The gay scene is slowly emerging, especially in the capital city Bratislava, a city that features a beautifully restored old town, and an imposing castle overlooking the Danube river. Slovakia is a country of mountains, rolling hills, medieval towns and thermal spas. The high Tatras mountains provide opportunities for great hiking, skiing and scenic tourism.
