Gay Guide Switzerland

There are no special restrictions applying to gay sex in Switzerland. The age of consent is 16 years and applies to everyone. But there is no statutory protection from discrimination. Same-sex couples have been able to register since 2007, gaining almost the same rights as married partners. The law passed by referendum in 2005 however excludes them from adoption and medically assisted reproduction methods. 2011 saw Switzerland decide against granting homosexuals the same adoption rights as heterosexuals, thanks to the conservative majority in parliament. Many lesbians and gay men lead an openly gay life in Switzerland without encountering any problems, even in rural areas. But there are still some aggressive homophobes left whom one should keep in mind while cruising outdoors or in gay areas late at night. As a travel destination Switzerland has something for everyone, from ibex in the Alps to the boisterous party scenes located in Lausanne, Geneva and Zurich, the latter a little more prudish now since the authorities increasingly enforce their moral standards. Individual destinations in the Alps also cater to lesbian and gay tourists, but offer no gay life as such. Switzerland is easiest seen by train, not all that cheap, but rewarding, as four different language and cultural regions (German, French, Italian, Rhaeto-Romanic) are combined in a very small area. Lakes Geneva and Constance, the Jura Mountains in the north and the almost Mediterranean Ticino in the south are all truly worlds apart. Although Switzerland prefers to celebrate its insular status and continually tighten immigration laws, the presence of new cultures is hard to overlook and accompanied by the usual difficulties, but also by cultural and culinary benefits: the traditional Swiss Cervelat sausage and folk music have been joined by welcome rivals.
