Two hours from Bangkok is the former fishing village, which became a rest and relaxation destination for US troops during the Vietnam War. The local government, hotels and restaurants are trying hard, with increasing success, to improve the run-down reputation of this town. Concerted action against child prostitution and drug abuse go hand in hand with improvements in water quality, and the beach has become good for bathing again, making Pattaya an attractive international resort, with considerable attractions for the gay visitor. Many local and foreign bar owners are taking great care to raise the standards of the accommodation and entertainment. The gay centre is located in a small but lively part of south Pattaya. But the small number of gay bars in the north of the town shouldn't be ignored. Pattaya is known for its drag bars, which are particularly loved by straight tourists.
