Gay Guide Caribbean - Bahamas
Homosexuality is legal in the Bahamas since 1991. The age of consent for heterosexuals is 16 years and for homosexuals 18 years. Residents and visitors alike are required not to violate the laws regarding public decency. A survey published in a Nassau daily newspaper in 2015 showed that 74.5% of those questioned were against opening marriage to same-sex couples. There is currently not even the possibility of a civil partnership - even protective provisions for LGBTQ people are not enshrined in Bahamas laws. However, homosexual people are allowed to serve openly in the military. In the past twenty years, there have been frequent reports of religious groups protesting against queer tourists in the Bahamas. However, smaller groups or couples who are discreet should have few problems in these days. One should always keep in mind though that a large part of the population still has a problem with homosexuality - and the government has not made any efforts so far to make designated marketing in LGBTQ tourism, as has already happened in other countries that depend on the tourism industry.
