Gay Guide Caribbean - Puerto Rico
In June 2015, the US overseas territory of Puerto Rico decided to recognise same-sex marriage. After the ruling of the US Supreme Court, which effectively introduces homosexual marriage in all 50 US states, Puerto Rico's Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla announced that his country would follow suit. Puerto Rico is neither a US state nor a independent one, but "freely associated" with the USA. The Puerto Ricans are citizens of the USA, but have no right to vote in US elections. This intermediate political position and considerable customs privileges ensure the economic well-being of this Caribbean island. Gay activities are focused completely on the capital San Juan. In January 2019, the openly gay singer Kevin Fret, known for his gender diversity, was executed in the capital in broad daylight. The assassins are still not caught - the case is considered a probable hate crime. Between 2002 and 2012 alone, at least 30 LGBT people were murdered in Puerto Rico.
