Gay Guide Cabo Verde

The Embassy of Cap Verde in Germany refused to comment on the legal situation for homosexuals on the island. Homosexuality has been legal since 2004 and the age of consent is 16, as it is for heterosexuals. But because the legalization of homosexual acts has not been in place for very long yet, the prejudices in society and social pressures are still quite considerable. The lack of an LGBT organization also contributes to the aggravated living conditions suffered by homosexuals. This former Portuguese Island on Africa's western tip was a convenient base for ships transporting slaves to Europe and the Americas. In 1975, Cape Verde finally gained independence from Portugal.
