Gay Guide Cabo Verde

Homosexuality has been legal since 2004 and the age of consent is 14 years for all. The former Portuguese colony is considered the most tolerant African country when it comes to LGBT rights. The reason for this is supposed to be its ties to Portugal and Brazil - the archipelago in the Atlantic lies halfway between the two countries. Discrimination against LGBT in the workplace is prohibited - a rarity in African countries. However, there are also reports of discrimination in Cape Verde. In 2013 the "Cape Verdean Gay Association" was founded, which immediately organised the first Pride of the country in the second largest city Mindelo. Three years later, the second Pride took place in the capital Praia, in 2018 it was even supported by the city government. Other LGBT organisations have also been formed in recent years, all of them demanding the opening of marriage. Especially the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente is considered a gay-friendly destination as its major city of Mindelo.
