Gay Guide China - Hong Kong

Although gay rights in Hong Kong are slowly being implemented, such as the recently passed Domestic Violence Ordinance, which now also applies to gay couples, gay life still remains largely hidden or closeted due to the local conservative culture. The main gay scene is located in Caseway Bay, Tsimshatsui and Mongkok. The most popular time for locals to go out is on Saturday night and evenings prior to a public holiday. The saunas are the most popular place for quick and uncomplicated sex. Most good saunas in Hong Kong provide free lube and condoms. The best time for a sauna visit is from 19-22h. Gay bars are busy around midnight until the early morning. The Hong Kong Chinese generally prefer locals as opposed to the Chinese from Mainland China. All drugs are illegal in Hong Kong and you can be searched by the police at any time. Prostitution is however legal in Hong Kong, unlike mainland China. Gay events include the annual Gay Pride Parade in October and the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and Mr. Gay Hong Kong Contest every November.
