Gay Guide Canada

Canada is a very liberal country and has a very colourful gay scene. Canada's age of sexual consent has been bumped up two years to 16 on the 1st May 2008. There is however an exception concerning anal intercourse, prostitution and exploitation of dependant relationships where the age of consent is set at 18 years. Discrimination on the grounds of homosexuality is prohibited by law. Legislation in Canada is extremely advanced: since 2005 same-sex partnerships are recognized for both homosexual and heterosexual couples, with the same rights as marriage, including adoption rights. Ten years ago Canada passed the Civil Marriage Act and permitted same-sex marriage. And, 2016 will mark 20 years since Canada explicitly included sexual orientation as one of the prohibited grounds of discrimination in the Canadian Human Rights Act. The new Liberal Prime Minister Trudeau appointed his cabinet, which is made up of a totally gender-equal team. Canada jumps in the world rankings of gender equality in governments from position 20 to the 3rd position worldwide. For the gay tourist the three metropolises Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal are of particular interest. Canada is unspoiled nature with large, bustling cities. This variable country stretches across 6 time zones, is surrounded by three different oceans and is the second largest country in the world. In contrast to its image that Canada is a frost and cold country high up there in the north, the Canadians remain unchallenged when comparing their "joie du vivre", and culture with that of the Europeans.
