Gay Guide Peru
The age of consent for homosexual and heterosexual acts is 14 years. Consensual homosexual acts between adults have been legal since 1924. Comprehensive laws to protect homosexuals from discrimination were introduced in 2017. Since 2016, it has also been possible for transsexuals to have their gender modified in legal papers. A bill to allow same-sex marriage failed in 2015. According to a survey conducted in 2017, only 28% of respondents support gay marriage. Gays and lesbians are rarely fully accepted by their families and are expected to keep their affinities to themselves. Homosexuality is recognised as a reason for separation or divorce. But there are also at last efforts in Peru to strengthen the rights of gays and lesbians. Meanwhile there are even LGBT Pride parades in many cities. In the capital Lima, 2017, more people than ever took part in the parade - including numerous Peruvian politicians. The South American country borders the Pacific Ocean in the west - it offers a diverse cultural past as well as a great variety of landscapes: beautiful beaches, large areas of rainforest and mountains like the world-famous Andes.
