The gay saunas in Budapest play an important role in the city's gay life. The bath houses here are a remnant from the Turkish occupation in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Much has been written about the interesting architecture to be found in these bath houses. Gay men will be spellbound by the wonderful local men found in these places. However, the customs and rules in Hungarian saunas are different to those that Westerners, especially men who usually go to other European or American bathhouses, are accustomed to. The main difference is that there are no specific areas where sex takes place and this is not the main focus of the thermal experience. This is not to say that it does not happen here!
