Gay Guide Bolivia

The Bolivian penal code has not mention of homosexuality. The age of consent is 16 years for all – violation of that can be punished with up to five years in prison. Since 2010 there has been a constitutional ban on discrimination - and the "Gender Identity Law" passed in 2016 to protect transsexuals is considered one of the most progressive in the world. Nevertheless, the small Latin American country is very divided. According to a survey conducted in 2012, 61% of those questioned are against opening marriage for all. The acts of violence against LGBTs also show frightening tendencies: In 2017 alone, 64 homosexuals or transsexuals were murdered - only 14 cases were investigated and none of the investigations led to a conviction. There is a small gay community in La Paz, but it cannot compete with in size with those of its neighbouring countries.
