Table Mountain
It is Cape Town’s landmark and towers majestically over the coastal metropolis. When the weather is good, the visitor has a spectacular view over the city and the Cape Peninsula. The mountain, which has been declared a national park, is home to some 1400 species of plants and invites visitors to go on extensive hikes. A cable car has been leading up Table Mountain since 1929, which was replaced by a rotating aerial tramway in 1997.
Muizenberg
The suburb, about 20 minutes away from Cape Town, developed into a chic beach resort at the end of the 19th century and is today best known for its colourful wooden bath houses (“Edwardian Beach Houses”). The more than 30 kilometres long sandy beach at False Bay is popular with bathers and surfers alike and is one of the most beautiful in the country.
Bo-Kaap
The Malay quarter, located in the western part of the city centre, was settled by former slaves in the 18th century and is still inhabited by a majority of Muslims today. With the Bo-Kaap Museum, its ten mosques and the brightly painted houses, the quarter, which is only one square kilometre in size, is a popular tourist attraction.
Boulders Beach
Penguins everywhere you look! Boulders Beach, located in Simon’s Town, about 30 kilometres south of Cape Town, is home to a colony of about 2000-headed penguins. The birds, which are about 70 centimetres tall, lay their eggs in caves they have dug themselves and are considered endangered in their population. Wooden walkways lead to the colony, and at neighbouring beaches there is even the possibility to swim with the penguins.
Camps Bay
Located at the foot of the 12 Apostles mountain range, Camps Bay beach is one of the most popular beaches in Cape Town. Along the palm-lined beach promenade with its trendy bars, restaurants and cafes, the motto is “see and be seen”. Especially on weekends Camps Bay is the romping place for young trendsetters.
Signal Hill
There is hardly a more beautiful place in Cape Town to watch the sunset. With views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain, from late afternoon onwards many people gather on Signal Hill to enjoy the view over the city with a picnic or a glass of wine. The mountain is also the starting point for many paragliders who descend towards Clifton. The summit can be reached easily by car or after a 60-minute hike.
