Homosexual acts have already been illegal in the strongly conservative Sultanate of Brunei. They are punishable with up to ten years of imprisonment. As of March 28th, 2019, the regime instates the death penalty for homosexuals according to the current Sharia law. The law becomes effective on April 3rd. From this day, homosexual couples who have sex with each other may be stoned to death. Brunei announced that this only applies to Muslim men, but urge caution how the new law may apply to visitors, no matter what their faith is. The Sultanate is the first Asian country to punish homosexuality with death.

Brunei is one of the richest countries in the world due to its vast oil reserves. It is located in the South China Sea on the island of Borneo and borders on Malaysia.

Our Gay Travel Index provides information on the countries which are particularly LGBT- travel friendly – and those which are not or even very dangerous. In 2019 Brunei ranked 146th next to other countries, including Ghana and Iraq.
