The EU agency EACEA announced with a bang: Six Polish local authorities that applied for EU funds will not receive any – because they declared themselves as “LGBT-free zones”. However, the gay politician Robert Biedrón thinks: “This is no reason to be happy”.

Mexico City bans conversion therapy
It is a great victory for Mexico’s queer community: in the capital, the inhuman conversion procedures are banned until further notice. Queer activists celebrate this step. The rest of the country could follow suit: in 2009, Mexico City was a pioneer in same-sex marriage. 18 of 31 states have since joined.

Netflix has stopped production of the Turkish drama series “If Only” after the Turkish Ministry of Culture and the Turkish Media Regulatory Commission (RTÜK) refused to grant the production team permission to shoot because of a homosexual character.

Israel: Ban on conversion therapy could bring down government
Yesterday, the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, passed a bill to ban conversion procedures in general. In the first reading, the proposal was adopted by 42 votes to 36. Two more readings are needed before the bill becomes a law. Nevertheless, the result of the vote led to great protest from Orthodox circles – and even endangers the survival of the fragile current government of Israel.

USA: Pentagon bans queer rainbow flags on military grounds
For some it is a step backwards, for others a blow against Trump: Because he wants to continue to see the flag of the Confederate Party on military bases, the Pentagon has now unceremoniously banned all “divisive symbols” – but that includes the rainbow flag. Queer organisations and politicians, including Pete Buttigieg, expressed their stron disapproval of this.

Malaysia: Minister opens chase on transsexuals
Human rights activists* in Malaysia are alarmed. Last week the Minister for Religious Affairs, Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, announced in the social media that he had given the Malaysian Religious Police full authority to arrest and imprison transgender people. The aim: a kind of “re-education” – he did not reveal the methods by which this was to be achieved.
