For days a video has been going viral in Russia, which shamefully incites against adoptions by homosexual couples. It shows the adoption of a boy by a gay couple – one of the men is wearing make-up, the boy is looking for his new mommy and in the end he gets a dress. The agenda behind it: Those who vote against homosexuals on July 1st will also vote for Putin to remain president for life.

The director of the orphanage is delighted: little Petenka is finally allowed to move into his own home, his adoptive parents want to pick him up. The boy is also happy when his new dad comes. But – where is his mum? The dad points to a man with make-up, whom he calls the “new mummy”. The man brings a dress that he wants to put on the boy – to the horror of the orphanage director. Finally, the men and the boy get into a car.

At the end of the video it says:

“Is this the Russia you want to choose? Decide on the future of the country. Vote to amend the constitution.”

The video was initiated by the pro-Kremlin Patriot Media Group, headed by Yevgeny Prigoshinm, a known ally of the Russian president.

What does Putin actually want to achieve?

The reason for publishing the video is simply to create a favourable mood before the vote on constitutional amendments on 1 July. One of the planned changes: Marriage should be enshrined in the constitution as a union only between a man and a woman. If the constitutional amendments are not accepted and the good Russian citizens do not take part in the vote, so the subliminal threat, children will soon be adopted by homosexual couples. However, this is already impossible under current Russian law.

Critics accuse Vladimir Putin that the issue is merely a Trojan horse for him. Selling it populistically is supposed to incite people to vote for the planned changes. What he is actually anxious and excited about: another proposed constitutional extension would delete Putin’s previous terms of office, which would allow him to serve two further terms of six years each.

When it comes to voting for the constitutional amendments, the rule is: all or nothing. This is why by advancing a polarising issue such as the ban on same-sex marriage, Putin is hoping for another 12 years in office – otherwise the 67-year-old would no longer be in office from 2024. If he remains the president of Russia until 2036, he was the head of government for a total of 32 years. By the way: Stalin’s reign lasted only 26 years.
