Gay Guide Napoli - Campania
When visiting Italy a trip to Naples is a must. Naples is unlike the rest of Italy: it is chaotic, loud, sincere and at the same time full of contradictions and charm. Many myths are told about Naples and unusual things can happen in this city on the Vesuv, leaving an everlasting impression. Even from a gay point of view Naples is unconventional. An "Arabian" attitude towards homosexuality exists here: of importance is whether one is active or passive and not whether one is homo or heterosexual. The figure of the "Femminiello" (the more feminine, camp gay) is traditionally seen in a positive manner. Piazza Bellini is a good starting point at night to discover the scene. Here is the meeting point for the youth and the gays. Party locations change frequently, so the best thing to do is check out what's happening on the night by word of mouth, or call the information lines to find out. Also useful is the homepage: www.napoligaypress.it. A lot of this is within walking distance, but one should be prudent and not carry too many valuables. When taking a taxi from the station or airport, insist on the fixed price for rides to the city centre. From the harbour city of Naples there are ferries travelling between the islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri. The famous city of Pompeii and the wonderful Amafian coast (especially worth mentioning is Positano) are further attractions, not far away and well worth a visit.
