The university town Bologna with its 400,000 inhabitants is not as well known as Milan or Verona, it is however, always - also for the gay tourist - well worth a visit. Here are the headquarters of the Arcigay, the most important LGBT federation are in Italy, and the very active regional publisher Cassero: regular parties take place in the attractive rooms of a former salt works. In addition Cassero organizes the Gender Bender festival every November. In tolerant Bologna a disproportionately high number of lesbians and gay men can be found. There are three saunas, including the biggest sauna in Italy, a gay bookstore and different clubs and bars. Bologna is known for his more than 38 km long arcades and offers many other tourist highlights like two skew towers Asinelli and Garisenda, the landmarks of the city as well as the basilica San Petronio.
