The 1,300-residents community of Scheffau near Wilder Kaiser is Austria’s gayest alpine village. The sextoy by mail-order company Gayrado is based here, the men-only hotel “Haus Romeo” opened in 2007, the “Jägerwirt” came under gay management in 2012. Does that much gay power create opposition? On the contrary. Heterosexual companies such as Pension Maikirchner carry the label “gay- and lesbian-friendly” by now. Also the gays cooperate. “We send guests to them, and when they have time they come to the bar,” says Uwe Krock, manager of Haus Romeo about his relationship with the “Jägerwirt” crew.
