The new Mr Gay World comes from Spain: Due to the corona crisis, the competition had to be postponed this year – the jury promptly selected last year’s runner-up as the winner for 2020. However, the Spanish doctor Francisco José Alvarado (30) scored another victory: He not only fought COVID-19 for his patients, but he also got infected – and was able to overcome the disease.

Alvarado works as a general practitioner at the Lavapiés Health Centre in Madrid. During his fight against Corona, he, like many health care workers worldwide, fell ill himself. He told the Spanish health magazine Redacción Médica that due to the high level of stress, he did not pay much attention to coughing or fatigue at first – after all, strenuous 24-hour shifts were not uncommon during the Corona crisis. Only when it got worse could he be tested.

The 30-year-old was also able to recover. He resumed his work at the beginning of April. Now the next triumph: The jury of the Mr Gay World competition chose the Spaniard without further ado as winner of the year 2020. Due to the Corona crisis the regular election had to be postponed. Alvarado followed Janjep Carlos (41, photo) from the Philippines. Just like last year’s winner, the Spaniard claims to continue fighting against homophobia and prejudices with the reach the title gives him. But enough words have been spoken:
